150 years of Italian shipbuilding

In 1873, Lorenzo Benetti purchased the Cantiere Darsena Lucca in Viareggio — a small workshop on the Tuscan coast that built wooden fishing boats and Mediterranean trading vessels. Over the next four decades, Benetti launched more than 30 sailing vessels: schooners, brigantine-schooners, tartanes, and cutters. It was a modest beginning for what would become the most prolific superyacht builder in Italy.

When Lorenzo died in 1914, his sons Gino and Emilio renamed the yard Fratelli Benetti and expanded into larger steel-hulled commercial vessels. The family built military ships during the Second World War, but it was the post-war boom — the era of La Dolce Vita — that pivoted the company toward pleasure craft. In 1954, the family split: Gino's descendants took the yacht business, Emilio's took commercial shipbuilding.

The critical transformation came in the 1960s under Lorenzo's great-grandson, also named Lorenzo. He abandoned wooden construction entirely, moving immediately to steel, and designed three yacht families that established the Benetti name internationally: the Delfino, the Tirreno, and the Mediterraneo. The Mediterraneo 33M, launched in 1967, was Benetti's first large yacht — and it set a template that persists to this day: displacement hulls, generous interior volume, and an aesthetic rooted in Italian design sensibility rather than northern European engineering austerity.

By the late 1970s, Benetti had attracted the attention of the world's wealthiest buyers. Saudi businessman Adnan Khashoggi commissioned the 86-metre Nabila — at delivery in 1980, the largest private yacht in the world. Designed by Jon Bannenberg, Nabila appeared in the 1983 James Bond film Never Say Never Again and became the most famous superyacht of her era. But the project proved ruinous: the demanding specifications and contractual terms drove Benetti into bankruptcy by 1984. For the full story of Nabila and her subsequent owners (Donald Trump, Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal), see our Benetti famous yachts guide.

The Azimut|Benetti Group

The rescue came in 1985, when Paolo Vitelli — founder of the Azimut fibreglass boatbuilding company, also based in Viareggio — acquired the bankrupt Benetti assets. It was a transformational moment for both companies. Vitelli provided the financial stability and business discipline that Benetti had always lacked; Benetti provided Azimut with the heritage, the large-yacht expertise, and the brand prestige that no amount of money could buy.

Under Vitelli's leadership, the Azimut|Benetti Group became the largest superyacht builder in the world by total length of yachts under construction — a position it has held continuously since 1999, as tracked by Boat International's Global Order Book. The group remains family-owned: Vitelli's daughter, Giovanna Vitelli, now serves as Group Vice-President and is increasingly the public face of the brand.

The group's scale is significant. Between the Azimut and Benetti brands, the combined operation delivers more superyachts per year than any other entity in the industry. Between 2016 and 2025, Benetti alone delivered an average of 15 yachts per year — a production volume that few competitors can match. The group also owns Fraser Yachts, one of the world's leading charter and brokerage firms, and operates the Lusben refit yard in Livorno.

Current model ranges

Benetti's current production spans six model families, covering everything from 34-metre composite cruisers to 75-metre steel semi-custom yachts and beyond into full-custom territory. This breadth distinguishes Benetti from competitors like Feadship and Lürssen, both of which focus exclusively on full-custom builds.

CLASS

The entry point to the Benetti range. Composite (GRP) displacement yachts built at the Viareggio yard. Currently includes the Motopanfilo 37M — a retro-inspired design drawing on 1960s nautical aesthetics with modern technical solutions — and the Diamond 44M, the largest fibreglass yacht Benetti offers. A new Motopanfilo 45M enters production in 2026.

OASIS

The range that introduced Benetti's signature Oasis Deck — a stern concept developed with British studio RWD featuring fold-out wings, an integrated infinity pool, and 270-degree sea views. Available in 34M and 40M models, with a new 42M entering the range. Composite construction, displacement hull.

B.NOW

Steel-hulled semi-custom yachts from 50 to 72 metres — the core of Benetti's commercial production. All four models (50M, 60M, 67M, 72M) can be specified with the Oasis Deck option. Exterior design in collaboration with RWD. These are the yachts most frequently seen in the Mediterranean and Caribbean charter fleets. Available with Benetti's E-Mode hybrid propulsion system.

B.YOND

Benetti's explorer-influenced range, designed for long-distance cruising with reduced environmental impact. Steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The B.Yond 37M features E-Mode hybrid propulsion by Siemens Energy. New models include the B.Yond 57M and a B.Yond Limited Edition 40M, both expected for 2027 delivery.

B.CENTURY

The most recent addition to the semi-custom programme, bridging the gap between B.Now and full-custom. Available in four sizes — 55M, 62M, 68M, and 75M — the B.Century offers sleek lines, generous outdoor spaces, and indoor-outdoor beach club terraces with folding platforms. The 75M is set across six decks.

CUSTOM

Full-custom yachts from 48 metres to over 100 metres, built at the Livorno facility. This is where Benetti competes directly with Lürssen, Feadship, and Oceanco — bespoke yacht construction to individual briefs. Notable recent custom deliveries include IJE (108m), Luminosity (107.6m), Lana (107m), Lionheart (90m), Alfa (70m), and Spectre (69m).

Viareggio and Livorno facilities

Benetti operates from two primary facilities in Tuscany, each serving a distinct role in the production programme.

Viareggio is the historical headquarters and the home of composite construction. The yard encompasses two historic sites — Darsena Lucca (the original 1873 workshop) and Darsena Italia — both equipped with modern technology for GRP yacht production. This is where the CLASS and OASIS families are built, along with the company's administrative and design functions. The total Viareggio facility covers approximately 47,000 square metres.

Livorno is where the large yachts are built. Acquired from the former Cantiere navale fratelli Orlando in 2003, the Livorno yard is a 190,000-square-metre facility with 30,000 square metres of covered production area capable of building multiple steel and aluminium superyachts simultaneously — including vessels above 100 metres. This is also one of the most important refit centres in the Mediterranean, with service capability for yachts up to 80 metres. All B.Now, B.Yond, B.Century, and Custom yachts are built at Livorno.

The combined Benetti workforce across both facilities totals approximately 2,140 people (320 permanent staff and 1,820 contract workers), making Benetti one of the largest private employers in the Tuscan maritime sector. Classification is typically to Lloyd's Register or RINA standards, and vessels are built to comply with MCA Large Yacht Code for commercial charter operation.

Notable Benetti superyachts

Benetti's fleet includes some of the most recognised vessels in the superyacht world. The yard's 'Giga Season' of 2019–2020 — in which three yachts above 100 metres were delivered within 12 months — was unprecedented for an Italian builder and remains one of the most remarkable production achievements in the industry's history.

IJE (108m, 2019) is the longest Benetti ever built, with exterior design by RWD and over 1,000 square metres of open deck space. Luminosity (107.6m, 2020) is the largest by volume at 5,844 GT and features a pioneering diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system. Lana (107m, 2020) — now listed for sale as Mar at €195 million — completed the trio.

At the other end of the timeline, Nabila (86m, 1980) remains one of the most culturally significant yachts ever built — the vessel that launched Benetti onto the global stage and nearly destroyed the company in the process.

For detailed profiles of each vessel, see our Benetti famous yachts guide. For the complete fleet listing with specifications, see the Benetti fleet page. For an industry-wide comparison, our largest superyachts ranking shows where Benetti vessels sit in the global fleet.

Buying or commissioning a Benetti

Benetti offers two distinct paths to ownership: the semi-custom programme and the full-custom programme. The choice depends on your timeline, budget, and the degree of personalisation you require.

The semi-custom programme (CLASS, OASIS, B.NOW, B.YOND, B.CENTURY) starts from a proven hull and platform, with extensive options for interior layout, materials, and equipment specification. Build times are 18–36 months depending on model and material. This is Benetti's innovation — the concept of a 'semi-custom' superyacht, pioneered in the mid-1990s, which offers significantly shorter delivery times and lower pricing than a full-custom build while still delivering a vessel that feels individual to its owner. Benetti also offers the 'Yachtique' styling service, allowing owners to select every detail of interior finish from a curated catalogue of premium suppliers.

The full-custom programme begins from a blank sheet — hull design, exterior styling, interior layout, and engineering specification are all determined by the owner and their design team. Build times are 36–60 months. The process is comparable to commissioning a yacht from Lürssen or Feadship, though Benetti's Italian approach to design and craftsmanship gives the resulting vessels a distinctly different character.

For buyers interested in acquiring an existing Benetti on the brokerage market, SuperYachtReview lists all currently available vessels in our Benetti for sale section. With approximately 145 Benetti yachts on the market at any time, the brand offers one of the deepest secondary markets in the industry. Frequently asked questions

Where is Benetti shipyard located?

Benetti operates from two primary facilities in Tuscany, Italy. The historical yard in Viareggio handles composite construction (GRP yachts up to 44 metres) and houses the company headquarters. The Livorno yard — a 190,000-square-metre facility acquired from the former Cantiere navale fratelli Orlando — handles steel and aluminium construction and can build multiple superyachts of 100 metres or more simultaneously. Benetti also operates a facility in Fano for smaller vessels.

Is Benetti part of Azimut?

Yes. Benetti has been part of the Azimut|Benetti Group since 1985, when Paolo Vitelli — founder of Azimut Yachts — acquired the shipyard after it entered financial difficulties following the construction of the 86-metre Nabila. The group is now led by Vitelli's daughter, Giovanna Vitelli, as Group Vice-President. Azimut|Benetti is the world's largest superyacht builder by total length of yachts under construction, a position it has held since 1999.

How many yachts has Benetti built?

Benetti has delivered more than 400 yachts since the yard began concentrating on private yacht construction in the 1960s. The full history stretches back to 1873 when the yard built commercial sailing vessels. In recent years, the yard has delivered an average of 15 yachts per year, ranging from 34-metre composite semi-custom builds to full-custom gigayachts above 100 metres.

How much does a Benetti yacht cost?

New Benetti prices start at approximately €17–18 million for the Oasis 34M and Motopanfilo 37M composite models. Steel-hulled semi-custom yachts in the B.Now and B.Yond families range from €45–55 million. Full-custom builds above 60 metres start from approximately €60 million, with gigayacht projects above 100 metres exceeding €100 million. On the brokerage market, pre-owned Benetti yachts range from under €2 million for older models to €195 million for the 107-metre Mar (Lana), currently listed for sale.

What is the largest Benetti yacht ever built?

The largest Benetti by length is IJE at 108 metres, delivered in 2019 with exterior design by RWD and interiors by Benetti's in-house team. The largest Benetti by gross tonnage is Luminosity at 5,844 GT — also 107.6 metres — which features a pioneering diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system. Both vessels were part of Benetti's remarkable 'Giga Season' in 2019–2020, when the yard delivered three yachts above 100 metres.

Benetti vs Feadship — how do they compare?

Benetti and Feadship occupy different positions in the market. Feadship is a Dutch builder focused exclusively on full-custom yachts, typically delivering 4–6 vessels per year with build times of 3–5 years. Benetti offers both semi-custom and full-custom programmes, delivering 12–15 yachts per year from its Italian facilities. Benetti's semi-custom models offer shorter lead times and lower entry prices; its full-custom programme competes directly with Feadship at the top of the market. The choice between them often comes down to design philosophy: Feadship's engineering precision versus Benetti's Italian craftsmanship and design flair.

What is the Benetti Oasis Deck?

The Oasis Deck is Benetti's signature stern design concept, developed with British studio RWD. It features fold-out wings that extend the deck space close to the water, an integrated infinity pool, 270-degree views, and a social layout that turns the aft section into an open-air lounge. Available across the Oasis 34M, Oasis 40M, and the entire B.Now family (50M to 72M), it has become one of Benetti's most distinctive design features.
